Teen, 16, stabbed in schoolyard after gambling row

A 16-year-old student of Golden Grove Secondary School was stabbed in the back with an ice-pick by another student in the school yard yesterday after a row over gambling.

The teen, of Haslington Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, was rushed to the Enmore Health Centre by teachers for medical attention after he was attacked. In addition to the stab wound, he sustained a gash to the head, where his assailant hit him using a cricket bat. The teen was treated and sent away.

Efforts to make contact with the teen or his parents for a comment were unsuccessful.
Students at the school stated that the teen’s attacker went home and collected the ice pick, which he used in the attack. The students also stated that the two boys were gambling during break time when it is alleged that one of them cheated the other, leading to a physical altercation.

It was after this that the student who committed the stabbing went home and returned with the ice pick. During the fight, he also picked up a cricket bat and dealt the other student several lashes to his head.

Teachers who saw the fight intervened and took the injured student to the health centre. It is unclear whether the police were called into the matter.
