Construction of the micro-hydro power plant at Chiung Falls in Kato, Region Eight is expected to start by October 2013, according to Prime Minister Sam Hinds.
The Government Information Agency yesterday reported that this initiative will comprise a 330-kilowatt micro-hydropower station with its primary energy source being the 36m head waterfall in the Chiung River, near Kato village.
Hinds provided the update during a visit to the area over the weekend. The project is the result of an agreement between the Government of Guyana and the European Union (EU).
GINA said it is estimated to cost Euros 2,455,797, ($615M) with the EU contributing $460M under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) while Government will be contributing the remainder.
