Bids opened for school at Kato, garbage bins, trucks for city

Bids were yesterday opened for the construction of the Kato Secondary School, in Region 8, in keeping with an agreement between the European Union and the Guyana government that the school be built to benefit from an EU-funded hydro project which is scheduled to commence construction soon

The total cost of the project is pegged at €2,455,797 ($615 million) with the EU contributing €1,841,848 ($460 million) under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), while the Guyana Government will contribute €613,949 ($154 million. The construction phase is expected to begin in February 2013 and be completed by February 2015.

A source close to the EU project told Stabroek News that the agreement to have the school constructed was so that the students of the area will be at a central location and be able to utilise the power coming from the project.

“Sufficient generating capacity for electrical services is to be provided to a secondary school complex to be constructed by the Ministry of Education, existing government buildings such as the nursery/primary schools, the guest house, the police outpost, medical facilities, school dormitories and to also facilitate agro processing and commercial farming. Furthermore the system will provide electricity to Paramakatoi through a 16 km transmission line which forms part of the intervention,” a statement from the EU in January had stated

Four companies submitted tenders and with an engineer’s estimate pegged at $680,200,431 the bids are as follows: Kares Engineering Inc Project Design Inc $520,796,456; Kares Engineering Inc $691,972,139; BK International $736,280,761 and Dookie Construction Services $829,615,070.

Meanwhile bids were also opened for supply of collection bins for Georgetown’s Solid Waste Management Programme. The engineer’s estimate for this project was given at US$165,822 ($33,164,400). The eight companies and their bids are: Fix It Depot US$192,089; Orkon Construction US$250,000; Memorex Enterprises $47,650,000; Cevon’s Waste Management Inc US$199,239; A and R Import Export Inc US$215,244; Dax Contracting $63,476,274; United Export Ltd of the United Kingdom US$166,663 and Maquinaaria Agroyogue of Madrid Spain whose bid was given as $169,848.

The same organisation also sought procurement of garbage disposal trucks. The quantity of trucks was not stated. Four companies submitted tenders: Dax Contracting Services $130,700,000, BK International Inc US$684,000, Fix it Depot US$269,080 and K and R Import and Export of the United States US$668,000. The Engineer’s Estimate for this venture is pegged at €376,800.
