Glue gun started flower shop blaze -Fire Chief

An electric glue gun was the source of the fire on Sunday that gutted the building at the corner of Church and Carmichael streets that housed Nesha’s Flower Shop.

Fire Chief of the Guyana Fire Service Marlon Gentle told Stabroek News that the fire was caused by the glue gun, which was left plugged in on the day of the fire. It was, however, unclear if the device had a shortage or was near flammable material.

Gentle stated that there was a room on the bottom flat of the building, where workers of the flower shop were working in preparation for an upcoming exhibition and a number of floral arrangements were being made. The workers were present in the building up 12 pm on Sunday, an investigation revealed.

On the afternoon of the fire on Sunday, owner of the flower shop Jasmine Deonauth told this newspaper that her business place was regularly vandalized by vagrants, whom she suggested may have been responsible for the fire.

At that time, she was unable to quantify her losses, explaining that she couldn’t recall due to the number of orders that had been placed and the materials which were bought and in for storage for the Christmas season. She said her losses could have been in the millions.
