One hurt in Letter Kenny collision

A Banks DIH truck and a canter on Saturday collided on the Letter Kenny public road, Corentyne leaving one person severely injured.

The canter driver, identified as Shawn Mohammed, 36, of Chesney, Corentyne, Berbice sustained a broken leg while his partner sustained minor injuries.  Stabroek News understands that Mohammed was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital and his partner was taken to the Anamayah Memorial hospital. The driver of the Banks truck, GEE 6182, is in custody. The accident occurred at around 1pm on Saturday.

When Stabroek News arrived on the scene, it was observed that Banks DIH officials were trying to visualize how the accident occurred. An eyewitness related to Stabroek News that the road was wet and the canter, GPP 8924, was heading east and the truck was heading west. The eyewitness said that the truck was overtaking a low bed trailer, GHH 9110, and was speeding back into its lane when it collided with the canter.

The eyewitness said that the driver of the canter saw the truck coming and attempted to slow down but slid on the wet road and slammed into the truck. He further explained that after the collision, the canter ended up in the drain along the road.

Meanwhile, the low bed trailer, swerved and part of it ended up in the drain and damaged a resident’s parlour, another eyewitness said. She added that she was relaxing in the hammock with her baby and when she saw the trailer swerving on the road, she hurried to pick her child up and ran into the house.

The canter was badly damaged and the entire front was smashed in. Police investigations are continuing.
