Taxi driver nabbed with cocaine, ganja – court hears

Taxi driver Fenton Jarvis, who police say was held with over 50 grammes of cocaine and marijuana, was yesterday remanded to prison on drug possession charges.

It is alleged that December 4, in Georgetown, Jarvis, 32, of Lot 1229 North Ruimveldt, had in his possession 38 grammes of cocaine and 25 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, before whom Jarvis was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, was told that ranks from the Police Narcotics branch, acting upon information they received, proceeded to a house in Leopold Street, Charlestown, and discovered the drugs on Jarvis’ person.

Prosecutor Seon Blackman further told the court that Jarvis was subsequently arrested and charged.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the accused had no special reason to be granted bail and may pose a flight risk if it was granted.

As a result, the magistrate refused bail and Jarvis was remanded until on January 7, when the case will be called in Court Three for reports and fixtures.
