Lumberjack crushed to death by tree

A lumberjack was fatally injured on Sunday afternoon after the tree he was cutting fell and pinned him to the ground.

Deaplall Muakelall, 41, and a father of five, died on the spot after the tree smashed into his back while he was cutting it in the Clonbrook Backdam, East Coast Demerara.

According to Deaplall’s wife, Babita, her husband left home around eleven in morning and did not return until she brought his body home to her children. Police are investigating the accident.

Babita told Stabroek News on Monday that it was around four in the afternoon when a neighbour called her and said that her husband had an accident in the backdam. “I received the call and she said come go now at the backdam with a chainsaw. A tree fall and it pin down your husband,” Babita mourned. “The only thing I gon remember is the tree on his back. Nobody ain’t tell me I see it for myself,” she cried, saying that that tragic memory was etched in her mind forever.

She said that when she had reached the scene of the accident, her husband was already dead. She broke down in tears as she related the story to a close relative who sought to comfort her. “It was the first time he went to cut wood there,” she added.
Muakelall’s body was taken to his home after they removed it from under the tree.
He is survived by four young sons and a teenage daughter.
