Port Kaituma man fined over ganja, resisting arrest

A Port Kaituma man was yesterday fined a total of $28,000 after he pleaded guilty to drug possession and resisting a policeman.

Shawn Fraser pleaded guilty when the charges were read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in Court 1 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. It is alleged that on December 15, Fraser was found in possession of 1 gramme of marijuana and when a police tried to arrest him he resisted.

Attorney Gordon Gilhuys said that Fraser uses marijuana because it helps him when he experiences asthma attacks. Gilhuys also said that his client suffers from seizures and pleaded with the Chief Magistrate to be lenient with him because the man regretted his behaviour toward the officer.

Fraser was fined $3,000 for possession of narcotics and $25,000 for resisting a police officer.
