Dear Editor,

The rule of law and the justice system have caused much controversial discussion in all walks of life and there seems to be no conclusion because there is an absence of credibility with respect to oral and written information.

Take for example the use of firecrackers during celebrations, especially for Diwali and Old Year’s Night. The law enforcement agencies such as the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority have lectured the public on the illegality of exploding firecrackers as well as the punishment for these offences. Yet the practice of selling and setting off these devices continues. The market vendors openly exhibit and sell firecrackers in full public view. In the evening, all hell breaks loose with elderly persons, seriously-ill patients, animals – all and sundry being affected. Perhaps it is a pollutant in the atmosphere in an era of environmental protection.

Are our law enforcement agencies incompetent? Has the rule of law become a mockery and a farce? Most Guyanese would surely like to know the truth.

Yours faithfully
Malcolm Clarke
