It will be good to see the parliamentarians having full, frank debates

Dear Editor,

Congratulations to the able Raphael Trotman for finding such a comfortable home on the Speaker’s Chair. I am delighted that the opposition has decided to play grown-up parliamentary politics instead of the futility of the streets. It is the only way forward.

It is now up to the majority ruling party to act niftily, sensibly, more consensually and inclusively in the national interest.

Remember that Harold Wilson survived as Prime Minister of the UK in 1974 for two years on a parliamentary majority of just three. The Whips held the upper hand but Labour got its programme through.

If nothing else, it will be good to see Guyana’s parliamentarians having full and frank debates and actually voting.

In ten years of observing the National Assembly, I have never seen a division.

Maturity reigns.

Yours faithfully,
John ‘Bill Cotton/Reform’ Mair
