Many vulnerable groups in Essequibo have not received a laptop under the OLPF programme

Dear Editor,

I am very perturbed as a disabled person with the One Laptop Per Family programme on the Essequibo Coast.

I hope to get some kind of response, as well as bring about the necessary corrections to this programme. I wish to state categorically that Essequibians are a progressive and educated people who will not be led astray by anyone who spreads misinformation in relation to the programme. According to the PPP Manifesto, it is the governing party’s intention to ensure that every household which cannot afford a computer receives one, by implementing programmes to promote access to information technology such as the One Laptop Per Family project which will see 90,000 laptops delivered to the most vulnerable families.

Editor, there should be a probe of the performance of those tasked with implementing the programme in Region Two, to ascertain whether it was poor, acceptable or good, based on the criteria laid down. This exercise would also serve the purpose of exposing the government policies of jobs for the boys and girls instead of the best person for the job. Many of the vulnerable groups have not received a laptop since this programme started. Well what must we Essequibians say? We know we do not get explanations like the people of Georgetown and other parts of the country. Millions of dollars are being spent on the One Laptop Per Family programme, and millions of dollars are being spent to pay the workers who are employed to carry out their job to the best of their ability in relation to it. Yet, the single parent and the disabled have to go to hell and back to get what is owed to them.

Yours faithfully,
Mohamed Khan
