Competitions should be decided by judges, not texting

Dear Editor,

Texting in a competition is not fair. Competitions need a panel of experienced judges to determine the outcome. To decide a winner by the number of texts in favour is to make a decision on the basis of popularity, while a panel of judges chooses on the basis of performance.

I am referring to the just concluded Chutney Soca Competition at the Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad, where three Guyanese artists, Terry Gajraj, Harresh Singh and Fiona Singh took part, and the GT&T Jingle Competition.

I have judged many singing/chutney, dancing/modelling and music competitions from primary/secondary school level to regional/national level.

Yours faithfully,
