Criminals know they have little chance of being caught

Dear Editor,

As a spectator I watch the Guyana scenario and have come to my own conclusion as to why there is so much crime, domestic violence and outright murder, especially of women.

One of the main reasons for so much crime is because the criminals are aware that the chance of them being caught is very slim; the perpetrators know the kind of people that make up the security forces. In the case of domestic violence the breadwinner is so hard pressed to make ends meet and is forever living on next week or next month’s pay and owes the grocer or the butcher, etc, although dare not owe GPL. Then he/she has to be bombarded with noise in the minibus, thanks to the Home Affairs Ministry, noise in the neighbourhood and in the street. Then there is the garbage, overflowing sewage, horse dung and cow dung, etc, so when his/her health is affected, his/her mind is affected. When he/she recognizes he/she is a prisoner put there by those who administer the affairs of this land and sees no light at the end of the tunnel, the least irritant sets him or her off. As for the murder of our women, here again the killers know the likelihood of them being caught is quite slim, so they go about their spree with little fear.

To make matters worse, when people felt the result of the last election would have freed them from the prison they find the people who won the election are in the opposition and those who lost still hold power due to Burnham’s constitution.

You see I walked with Cheddi Jagan in the early days of the PPP and I know what the man wanted for Guyana; those who have replaced him are doing the very opposite of what Cheddi wanted.

Yours faithfully,
E Arokium
