Noise nuisance in Hopetown continues unabated

Dear Editor,

Regarding my recent letter to Stabroek News, dated January 21 and captioned,‘Fort Wellington police should lay charges against those creating a noise nuisance in Hopetown,’ I would like to inform you that to this very day, nothing has changed. As a matter of fact, the situation has gotten worse.

Loud music continues to create havoc in the village of Hopetown. Police seem unable to uphold the law. After hours a bar blares till 4 am. Law-breakers seem to have the upper hand. Meanwhile, the earth trembles; houses shake; windows rattle; the thunderous bass disrupts the normal heart rates of the elderly and feeble; and children and adults in the vicinity are unable to sleep.

On February15, at 12.30 am a complaint was made by a citizen of Hopetown to Fort Wellington Police station about a noise nuisance. The constable on duty informed the complainant that a dispatcher would be sent immediately. At 12.45 am the music got louder, and the owner of the establishment continued to blare music in defiance of the law. At 12.50 am the said citizen made a follow-up call to the Fort Wellington Police. The constable on duty retorted that a dispatcher had already been sent and he abruptly hung up his phone. Meanwhile, loud music continued to be heard.  At 1 am a call was made by the said citizen to central branch, New Amsterdam Police. A complaint was lodged, and the location given. Central branch promised to contact Fort Wellington. Meanwhile, loud music continued to blare incessantly, in defiance of the law. No dispatcher from either Fort Wellington or New Amsterdam central branch was seen arriving at the establishment concerned to enforce the law.

We, the law-abiding citizens of Hopetown, are once again appealing to the Assistant Commissioner of Fort Wellington Police Station to please take note of what is happening in our village. We ask him to please ensure that his subordinate officers perform their duties effectively and  crack a simple case of noise nuisance, that has been plaguing our community for many years.

The Fort Wellington Police have failed miserably to serve and protect citizens in this small community of Hopetown. Mr Boodram should remind his officers that they are paid by our tax dollars to serve and to protect, and we expect them to uphold the law whenever they are called by the citizens to do so, as in this case. We do hope that this will be our last letter to the editor, and that we will be released from the lawless blaring of noise emanating from these after-hours places. By the same token, we also promise that we would not rest until justice is meted out to those few who think they are above the law.

Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
