Traffic chaos at Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge

Dear Editor,

Since the removal of the Control Tower from the centre of the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge, vehicular movements have become chaotic due to the automatic changeover of the traffic lights. On many occasions, vehicles on both ends (east and west) face up to each other, causing stalemates for very long periods and making life uncomfortable for working people and citizens as a whole.  For example, when the green light is at one end and red light at the other, the driving distance and time cause a continuous flow of traffic in one direction until the light changes.  When that happens, vehicles at the other end cannot cross even though the green light is on because traffic is still on the bridge coming in the opposite direction.  Some drivers, having the green light force their way onto the bridge because they have waited a long time (15-20) minutes to cross. This in some cases causes stalemates, quarrels, and even a cuss out.

The Police Traffic Depart-ment, Linmine Secretariat and the Mayor and Town Council of Linden need to introduce a better system to alleviate chaos and confusion at the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge as early as possible.  The Traffic Police who are attached to Linden town are aware of this situation at the bridge, but some can be insensitive to good judgment.  It is high time we have a double lane bridge, since this bridge is the gateway to the Interior.

Let us remember, Justice is blind, it doesn’t have a colour or a face.

Yours faithfully,
B Winslow Parris
