Supenaam stelling at 22.5-tonne loads following modifications by T&HD

Dear Editor,

I wish to correct two false assertions made in the Stabroek News edition of March 17th, 2012 under the headline  `Engineers report slammed VIKAB, BK over bungled Supenaam Stelling’.

Firstly, the article refers to”……gross failure of the project.” I wish to categorically state that there is no “gross failure” of the project. The interventions proposed and put in place by the Ministry of Public Works and the Transport and Harbours Department have seen successful use of the facility with all Transport and Habours Department operations to the Essequibo Coast having been moved from Adventure to Supenaam since, March, 26th, 2011.

Secondly, the article asserts that: “The stelling is operational at the moment but not to its full capacity since only 16 tonnes per truck is allowed to use the facility.” This is, also, grossly inaccurate and misrepresents the facility capacity and use because the facility has been accepting up to 22.5 tonne loads from since May, 2010, subsequent to the Transport and Harbours Department modifications.

Yours faithfully,
Robeson Benn
Minister of Public
Works
