Several schools in Pomeroon have not received ballots for GTU poll

Dear Editor,

The Elections Officer of the Guyana Teachers’ Union who is an employee has issued a gag order. He has said that anyone associated with the GTU elections and nominees; this also includes Central Officers of the union, who is found speaking about the election without his permission will be disciplined by the GTU disciplinary committee and/or taken to the courts.

I guess he would not want me to say that several schools in the Pomeroon GTU  Branch (about 130 members)  have not received ballots and that the wrong date was placed on the ballots.

The deadline for the return of those ballots is almost here and there seems to be a lack of concern for members who cannot vote because they have not received their ballots.

I suppose I should refrain from saying that because  the way this election is being handled, the results might have to be determined by a court of law and that several members have indicated their willingness to withdraw from the union.

I was once suspended from the union for writing a letter and my suspension was in violation of the GTU constitution. I wonder if an employee who has never been a member of the Guyana Teachers’ Union can use the union’s constitution to do the same thing.

Yours faithfully,
Milne Seymour
