All Guyanese should support the Golden Jaguars

Dear Editor,

It is with pride and joy that I sit here writing this letter as one of the founder members and senior executives of Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United Football Club, and also a former 3rd vice-president of the Georgetown Football League in charge of youth football tournaments for the under 13, under 15 and under 17 age groups as coordinator and supervisor. As such I have had the privilege of coordinating and supervising many of the Georgetown players now in the Guyana Golden Jaguars Team. I have been taunted by many when I have mentioned that Guyana had talented players to match many players in world football.

I must congratulate Mr Frankie Wilson and his staff for doing a tremendous job; Mr Jamal Shabaaz, Technical Director of the Guyana Golden Jaguars for his dedication and respect; and Mr Wayne Dover, Head Coach for his yeomen service to the team. I know it was, and still is hard work to match strides with the teams that took part in the past World Cup Final such as Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, El Salvador, Costa Rica and at the top of the heap, Colombia and Mexico, not to mention Panama which played with Argentina and Brazil in the World Cup play-off.

I urge all Guyanese of all races, colours and creeds, whether football lovers or not to support the outstanding effort by the Guyana Golden Jaguars as they move forward in the FIFA World Cup 2014 3rd round play-off.

I have given myself the honour of being one of the oldest supporters of football in Georgetown for 37 years.

I have not had the privilege of seeing many past matches and maybe I will see no future matches played by the Golden Jaguars as I am partially blind with glaucoma, but for me the Guyana Golden Jaguars have already gotten gold.

Yours faithfully,
Maurice Cato
