Health and education, not guns

Dear Editor,

In the recent football game between Guyana and Costa Rica if Guyana had won I would have been happy. However, I am just as happy that Costa Rica won.

You see, during the more than three weeks I spent in Costa Rica in 1990 I found the society to be a disciplined, orderly and tidy one.

With what I saw in that tiny Central American country their sportsmen must be good and/or excellent players. Costa Rica does not have an army and one Costa Rican, Prof Gonzalo, told me that they don’t spend their money on guns, they spend it on health and education.

Well done Costa Rica.

Yours Faithfully,
W.P. George
