New Guyana School should change its employment policy

Dear Editor,

As we continue to face the ugly realities of 2012 Guyana, I could not help but notice very prominent advertisements from the New Guyana School asking for staff. The New Guyana School in its advertisements, is asking for Christian staff only – teachers and cleaners so far have been advertised for.

Every now and then, Guyanese leaders like to celebrate what they think is a freedom of religion which seems to be matched by ‘religious tolerance.’ I have been taught by Christian teachers and non-Christian teachers and attended learning institutions with cleaners of all religious persuasions.

I sincerely hope that their vision for a New Guyana does not mean a place without Hindus, Muslims or people who are not Christian.  I hope that the administrators, parents and students of the New Guyana School would change their employment policy and welcome staff who are qualified to work in their schools, regardless of their religious beliefs.

Yours faithfully,
Vidyaratha Kissoon
