Recondite language

Dear Editor,

The SN edition of Nov 22, 2012 published the names of the four gentlemen short-listed for the prestigious position of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana. The credentials/ resumé of these high profile candidates as we were informed were no doubt very impressive.

On Mr Jaipaul Singh, SN stated in part: “according to his bio-data posted on the University of Central Lancashire website Dr Singh gained a BSc (Major Biology and minor Chemistry) from the University of Guyana…

“In 1974 he joined the University of St Andrews in Scotland where he did his PhD on a thesis entitled ‘Evidence for the involvement of intracellular cyclic nucleotides in the control of myocardial contractility.’

Editor I couldn’t for all the tea in China figure out just what that was about. My question is can’t the SN in future give a lucid breakdown for the sake of people like me to have a teeny-weeny understanding of such cryptic, recondite language?

Because we would really like to know.

Yours faithfully,
Frank Fyffe
