De Table Tennis Federation looking for a President

Not a few of his colleagues have said that there was a time when Henry Greene used to be one of the fittest, trimmest policemen in the Force. Not these days. That he is seriously overweight is beyond question and there was much worry when a recent bout of illness took him to hospital. Time was, too, when he played a mean game of table tennis and as best as we know his game is still good enough once he isn’t required to dart around the table defending against a really good attacking player.

After enduring Anil Nandlall for some time (Nandlall has of course moved on to bigger things these days) the local Table Tennis Federation went for Henry Greene as its President. Greene, some members of the Federation said would breathe new life into the sport which has been constantly bedevilled by a lack of cash and, it seems, a lack of competent top executives. Greene, we are told, took to the job like a duck to water, organizing tournaments and coaching clinics and mobilizing monies, reportedly through his friends in the private sector, to keep the game moving. He was particularly lauded for the Federation’s successful hosting of the regional Table Tennis tournament earlier this year.

But Greene, it seems, has lots of enemies in table tennis circles and while no one is excessively anxious to publicly advocate that he demit office – as head of the Federation, that is – there are those who just wish that he would go quietly. Mr. Greene, they say treats the Federation as though he owns it, though, if the truth be told, we  understand that there are people in the sport who simply envy Greene his success – as President of the GTTF, that is – and want to see the back of him.

So where does that leave us? Well it certainly seems that a conspiracy is being hatched against Uncle Henry. There were rumours the other day of a possible Vote of No Confidence though we are told that the players and the rest of the executive, found great difficulty in properly interpreting the circumstances under which a Vote of No Confidence in the President could properly be moved. Then there were those who were saying that they would have nothing to do with a Vote of No Confidence in Henry unless the vote was taken by secret ballot. Apparently the weight of the man is something that his detractors are terrified of.

So that even if he stops being Top Cop it seems that Uncle Henry will be running with the GTTA for some time to come though not a few people say that that would do the game more harm than good.
