Lampkin gets the better of Hollingsworth again

By Emmerson Campbell

Dawani Lampkin of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) gym and Five Star’s Matthew Hollingsworth highlighted the first night of boxing at the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) National Trials Championships Friday last at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The two-day championships, which was organised to provide active competition for the amateur boxers, saw the two promising pugilists, Lampkin and Hollingsworth (105 to 109 pounds) going at it from the opening bell.

Lampkin, who had narrowly defeated the Five Star’s product last month on the 20th edition of the Guyana Fight Night Pro Am card once again had his hands full in the rematch.
However, the taller southpaw did enough once again to eke out a two to one victory.

The two boxers, who entertained the small crowd in their highly competitive slugfest, seem to be brewing a budding rivalry.

In other results from Friday night’s card, Harpy Eagles’ products Kevin Mullings, Kurt Allicock and Elijah Insanally, all recorded victories over their respective opponents.

Mullings (50-54 pounds) stopped his gym mate Moses Oxford in the 53rd second of round number two, while Allicock (70-74 pounds) halted Pocket Rocket Boxing gym’s Shaquille Simon at one minute, two seconds of round one.

Insanally (80-84 pounds) got a two to one decision over James Walcott Jr. who is also his gym mate.

Five Star’s Delroy Treyfall (65-69 pounds) also recorded a two to one victory over Kevin Mullings’ brother Kevon Mullings.

Treyfall’s gym mate Rayon Sumner (90-94 pounds) was not to be outshone as he recorded the fastest victory of the card, disposing of Harpy Eagles’ pugilist Tefon Greene in 35 seconds of the first round.

In the headline anticlimax, FYF’s Shawn Michaels thoroughly outboxed Five Star’s Dequan James, easily winning their encounter three to none.

The championships which ended last night saw the finalists in each of the 12 bouts receiving medals. Full results of last nights results will be published in a subsequent article.
