GCB donates half a million dollars to Sean Devers

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has donated half a million dollars to veteran cricket journalist and international cricket commentator Sean Devers to assist him to undergo an operation overseas.

Devers, who was recently diagnosed with Glioma (a tumor found in either the brain or the spine) is set to undergo an operation abroad to have the tumor removed.

On Friday, at the GCB Office, Devers received a total of $500,000 from the GCB along with a number of undisclosed sums of money from other individual GCB executives to aid in paying for the cost of the operation.

The presentation was made by GCB President Ramsey Ali who explained why the board was happy to help Devers.
“At our executive meeting last week Friday, members of this fraternity unanimously agreed to support Devers and his family in this time of need. Over the years he has contributed outstandingly to local cricket in a capacity as a reporter and he is certainly a member of the cricket family of Guyana,” said Ali.

He continued: “We (the GCB) are also pleased to know we are able to make such a donation to someone also. “I’m not using this opportunity to make a political statement, but we have been accused of mismanaging of our finances, but in a small way, this is a clear example that we are in good order financially.”

Ali also said that the GCB was planning to have an event to raise funds for Devers’s operation.

In accepting the donation an emotional Devers thanked the GCB for its contribution and other entities who have assisted him so far.

“I would like to thank the GCB for this gesture; they are the third to donate following the Guyana Floodlight Cricket Softball Association (GFSCA) and Caribbeancricket.com. I am leaving Sunday and I’m confident all the prayers I am getting from everyone will lead to a positive outcome.”
