Wiltshire sets up key clash with Khalil

Garfield Wiltshire, a former three-time Southern Caribbean squash champion was down to play former Under-19 Caribbean girls’ singles champion Ashley Khalil last night at the Georgetown Club in the Guyana Squash Association annual Bounty Farm Limited Handicap squash tournament.

The tantalizing clash between Khalil (-5) and Wiltshire (-20) in the Open category of the handicap tournament was set to be the highlight of last evening’s encounters.

Wiltshire marked his return to the sport he had dominated for many years by defeating Ian Meckdeci 15-13, 15-11, Thursday night.

Other scheduled matches last night pitted Christopher Lowe against Ryan Rahaman; Medhi Ramdhani against Nyron Joseph; Jonathan Antzak against Lee Fung A Fat; Nicholas Narain against David Fernandes; Robert Fernandes against Ashley De Groot; Steven Persaud against Joshua Abdool and Mary Fung-A-Fat against Adam Alves.

Thursday night there were wins for Adam Alves (+8) over Steven Xavier (-8); Medhi Ramdhani (+8) over Joven Benn (-8); Khalil (-5) over Philip Fernandes (+8) 15/13, 3/15, 15/12; Rahaman (+6) over Mike Atherley (+8) 15/11, 16/14; Ramdhani (+8) over Joven Benn (-8) 15/1, 15/8;  Joseph (-8) over Ryan Mc Kinnon (+12) -3/15,16/14,15/13 and Antzak (+8) over Schelte van Dyke (+10) 15/12, 15/10.

In other results, Lee Fung-A-Fat got a walk over from Devindra Sahadeo; Nicholas Narain (+6) beat Mikhail Carto (+8) 17/15, 15/9; David Fernandes (+11) beat Patrick Fraser (+8) 15/13, 17/16;

In last night’s A category main draw, Jonathan De Groot was down to play Alec Melville; Haopei Yang was up against Maya Collins; Rebecca Lowe played  Andrew Peroune and Alexandra Phang took on  Mahendra Khusial.

First round matches in the two plate competitions were also scheduled for last evening while the quarter final and semi final matches will be played today  with the finals scheduled for tomorrow from 11.00 am.

The tournament has attracted a lot of interest from the local squash players with over 50 players  participating in the two category tournament.

The tournament commenced Tuesday night with two matches in the Open category and eight matches in the A category while one match  which saw  defending Open champion Jason Ray Khalil being defeated by Christopher Lowe was played on Wednesday night.

Lowe won 15/10,15/-2.
