Amazon Conquerors to continue playing in Regional four-day competition

The Guyana cricket team will play its final two four-day games versus Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago in the ongoing 2011/12 regional first-class competition.

However, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) training camp over the weekend at Providence stadium, under the supervision of Mark Harper, Roderick Lovell and Carl Moore was poorly attended. Only two members of the squad (Leon Johnson and Ramnaresh Sarwan) who played in the opening four matches versus Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, Combine Campuses and Jamaica turned up to the sessions.

With the government filing an injunction against the GCB making them unable to function at this time, there was heightened speculation that an IMC team may be picked, which possibly would lead to the Guyana team not being able to participate in their remaining fixtures, given the consistent position taken by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) that they wouldn’t  recognize any team out of Guyana not picked by the GCB.

However during the WICB directors meeting on Tuesday, WICB Corporate Communications Officer Imran Khan confirmed to the media yesterday that the decision on Guyana emanating from that meeting, is that the local team previously picked by the GCB will be allowed to play.

“As a result of the situation in Guyana there has been speculation regarding the Barbados v Guyana Regional Four-Day match scheduled to start on Friday, March 9th at the Kensington Oval in Barbados,” said Khan.

His statement continued: “The WICB confirms the match will proceed as scheduled, the Guyana squad will travel to Barbados tomorrow Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 and the squad which has been participating in the Regional Four-Day Tournament will continue to do so save for one change as noted below.”

“Devendra Bishoo who was previously in the Guyana squad has been selected to the West Indies squad for the first three Digicel One Day Internationals v Australia and is encamped with the West Indies squad in preparation for the Digicel Series.”

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, having been originally named in the Guyana squad at the start of the Regional Four- Day Tournament, but who missed the first four rounds of matches to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, has replaced Bishoo,” Khan’s statement concluded.

It was also confirmed that the previous staff of David Black, David Harper and Esuan Crandon will be with the team, while Chanderpaul is expected to replace Permaul as team skipper.
The Guyana team left for Barbados early this morning at 5:30am.
