Windwards fight back after CCC take points

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Windward Islands were fighting back against Combined Campuses and Colleges but the sixth round Regional Four-Day encounter remained fairly open at the close of the second day here yesterday.

The hosts finished the day on 106 for four in their second innings, after conceding a lead of 60 runs on first innings at the National Stadium.

Discarded West Indies limited overs batsman Andre Fletcher was leading the fightback with an unbeaten 43.

Earlier, CCC were bowled out for 209 after resuming the day on 48 for three.

Left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin snatched four for 23 and was supported by off-spinner Shane Shillingford with three for 47.

They slumped to 53 for four when opener Kyle Corbin fell after adding just three to his overnight 24 but Jason Holder hit 41, veteran left-hander Floyd Reifer chipped in with 37, Raymon Reifer stroked 30 and captain Romel Currency got 29, to hand the students first innings points.

Raymon Reifer and Currency added 55 for the fifth wicket and when both fell just eight runs apart, Floyd Reifer and Holder put on a precious 76 for the seventh wicket.

While Holder cracked two fours off 87 balls, Reifer stroked four fours off 65 balls in two hours at the crease.

The partnership was broken when Reifer prodded Mathurin into the waiting hands of Keddy Lesporis at short leg, triggering a collapse that saw the last four wickets fall for 17 runs.

The Windwards were immediately in strife when Devon Smith edged Holder behind without scoring and opening partner Atticus Browne departed in the same fashion for three, off seamer Kevin McClean (2-39).

Tottering at four for two, the Windwards were bailed out by Fletcher who has so far faced 102 balls and struck three fours in a responsible innings.
