Olympic Day run, walk jog event set for next Sunday

The annual Olympic Day run, walk and jog event, which is held by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) is set to take place next Sunday from its usual starting point, outside the Thomas Lands YMCA, Camp Street, commencing at 6am.
The event is open to all members of the public 10 years and older and registration is free.

Vice-President of the GOA, Dr. Karen Pilgrim, said that while an individual does not have to register in order to participate in the event, registering guarantees that individuals will be issued the customary T-shirts and IOC participation certificates.

However, registration is compulsory for teams wishing to participate in the team run, which is open to teams comprising of four males and two females.

Organization can enter teams in the team run but all members of the team must complete the race in order to earn points for the team.

Participants of the team run will be vying for a first prize of $60, 000, while $42, 000 will be awarded to the team that places second and $30, 000 for third place.

Additionally for the first year the event will feature a trophy which will be awarded to the top team that does not include a seasoned runner.

Registration for the event closes at 16:00hrs on Wednesday. Completed entry forms can be deposited at Olympic House, 76 High Street, Kingston. No entry forms will be accepted for the team run after the closing date.

The run is held in commemoration of World Olympic Day, which will be celebrated this year on June 24. World Olympic Day is aimed at spreading Olympic Values worldwide. The Olympic Day run is organized in individual countries through the National Olympic Committees.

Apart from the run, it is customary for other sporting associations to hold Olympic Day activities. Cycling has confirmed that it will be hosting an event on June 23.

Assistant Racing Secretary of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Hassan Mohamed, MS, confirmed that the event will be held in the National Park from 9:30hrs, featuring BMX races in four age category; namely 6 – 9 years old, 9 – 12 years, 12 – 14 years and a BMX open category. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers.

The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has not yet confirmed if it will host an activity this year.
