The Goodwill draughts series between Guyana and Suriname got underway on Friday evening with the opening ceremony at the Providence National Stadium with Guyana’s Director of Sports Neil Kumar declaring the tournament open.

Kumar said he was pleased to have the Suriname team here to oppose their Guyanese counterparts adding that he was anxiously awaiting the results.

Kumar added that it was good to see that Guyana was maintaining good relationship with Suriname since they have a very good team.

“It is good to see them play especially the younger ones. I promise to make sure that the tournament is supported to its fullest and ensure that the tournament runs properly,” said Kumar.

President of Guyana Draughts Association Jairam (only name), and James Ramlall, President of the Caribbean centre in Suriname and a former Minister of Sports were also in attendance.

Jairam said the competition was scheduled to commence yesterday at 6pm adding that today certificates will be distributed to the players who excelled.

Trophies donated by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport of both Guyana and Suriname will also be handed out.
