Adams strokes century but T/dad takes first innings points

PINE BASIN, Barbados, CMC – All-rounder Ricardo Adams slammed a hard-hitting, maiden century for Guyana but could not prevent Trinidad and Tobago from landing first innings honours in their drawn game of the Regional Under-19 three-day Championship yesterday.

The Guyanese, 180 for four overnight and still behind Trinidad & Tobago’s first innings total of 375 for seven declared by 195 runs, were dismissed for 245 in the morning session.

With a first innings advantage of 130, Trinidad & Tobago went on the hunt for quick runs and declared for the second time in the match having rattled up 124 for three off 20.5 overs.

Set an improbable 255 to win with a minimum of 45 overs available, Guyana safely manoeuvred their way to 117 for four to render the contest a stalemate.

The 17-year-old Adams, who resumed the final day on 53, added four more fours along with three sixes as he rushed to his century, 102, from 133 balls in 173 minutes. All told, the left-hander smacked nine fours and six sixes before falling to a well-judged catch in the deep by Jeremy Solozano off Anthony Simmons’ bowling.

He and skipper Shawn Pereira, 14 not out overnight, spearheaded a middle order recovery as they extended their fifth wicket partnership to 107 before off-spinner Addrien Daniel won an lbw verdict against the captain, 53 minutes into the final day’s play. It took just short of another hour for Trinidad & Tobago to wrap up the Guyana innings and force an early lunch with Daniel (3-30) and Simmons (4-45) running through the lower order as the last five wickets fell in seven overs for the addition of just five runs. Solozano (54) then took the opportunity to add a second innings half century to the 160 not out in the first innings. The left handed opening bat put on a quickfire 77 for the first wicket with Stephen Wharwood (40) to launch Trinidad’s second innings. Umpires: Z Bassarath, G Sukhdeo.
