Sunil Singh’s century leads Transport ‘A’ to narrow win

By Neil Barry

Inspired by a century from wicketkeeper Sunil Singh, Transport Sports Club `A’ team pulled off a narrow 20-run victory over the Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) when the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)’s David Persaud Investments Cup competition continued yesterday.

Singh, who opened the batting for Transport `A’ scored 130 out of his team’s total of 196 all out in 35 overs on the small GYO ground.
In all Singh struck a whopping 13 sixes and six fours before he was caught off the bowling of Mark Hamilton who picked up 2 for 27. Singh’s performance undermined a decent effort in the field by GYO as no other Transport batsman passed 20.

Garfield DeRoach picked up 2 for 41, Navendra Seeraj 2 for 40 and Shiveshwar Sankar 2 for 37.
In their chase GYO lost wickets at crucial intervals but managed to bat until the penultimate over of the match before Dwayne Debarros, who played a fighting knock of 39 to keep his team in with a chance of either a win or a draw, held out in the deep off Joshua Ram as GYO ended on 176 all out.
Ryan Shun top scored with 43 for GYO with four sixes and a four while Vanyus Kissoon scored 23.

In Queenstown, the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) `B’ fought hard to ensure a drawn game against Everest, who seemed destined for victory until late wickets altered that result. With three runs required for victory DCC `B’ took two wickets off the final two deliveries to leave Everest stranded on 9 for 141. DCC `B’ had earlier scored 142 -9 in a game reduced to 35-overs-a-side. Diquan Murray top scored with 28 down the order while C. Reese made 27 and R. Balgobin 24.
Bowling for Everest, G. Sookdeo had 2 for 22 and A. Rasheed 2 for 26.

In Everest’s run chase Sherfayne Rutherford got them off to a decent start with 27 but regular wickets from DCC `B’ kept the game in the balance. Chris Surat scored 36 taking Everest to the brink of victory before his departure started a slide that prevented his team from attaining victory. For DCC `B’ S. Hathiramani had 2 for 15, S. Hussain 2 for 10 and C. Reece 2 for 26.
