Nicolette Fernandes to face Meakins in Caribbean squash finals

Guyana’s Nicolette Fernades was down to contest the final of the senior Caribbean Squash Championships in Trinidad and Tobago yesterday after winning her semi-final encounter on Monday.

Fernandes, the current Caribbean champion and World ranked number number 73 player defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s number one player Kerrie Sample 11/6, 11/4, 11/5 and was billed to play Karen Meakins of Barbados in yesterdays final.

Meakins, a 12-time Barbados national women’s champion and the number two ranked player in the region defeated Guyana’s Victoria Arjoon winning 11/6, 11/4, 11/1 in the quarter-finals.

While Fernandes  got the better of Nadia McCarthy  of Barbados 11/4, 11/0, 11/5, in her quarter-final match, Guyana’s Ashley Khalil lost to Barbados’ number two Cheri-Ann Parris 9/11,10/12, 11/7, 9/11 while Mary Fung-A-Fat was outplayed by  Sample 4/11, 2/11, 4/11.

In the men’s quarter-finals Guyana’s Julian Chin lost to six-time Barbados National Champ Shawn Simpson 5/11, 11/6, 9/11, 6/11 while Richard Chin was upset by young Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands 9/11, 11/6, 11/9, 11/6.

Both Chins were then entered into the Classic plate to play off for 5-8th positions but unfortunately, they were drawn against each other and Richard prevailed 13/11, 11/8, 11/8.

Richard will now play T&T’s number one Josh Pinard for fifth place while Julian will play Barbados number one Gavin Cumberbatch for seventh.

In the playoffs for fifth to eighth position in the women’s draw Ashley Khalil beat Nadia McCarthy (Bar) 11/8, 9/11, 11/8, 11/5 and Mary Fung-a-Fat beat Victoria Arjoon 11/8, 11/7, 7/11, 7, 11, 11/7.

Fung-a Fat will now play Ashley Khalil for fifth place while Arjoon will play Nadia McCarthy for seventh.

2-Steven Xavier lost to Andrew Stout (Ber) 12/10, 10/12, 6/11, 2/11.

Men’s Plate semis
Jason Khalil lost to OECS and St Vincent’s Jules Snagg 11/9, 5/111, 6/11, 9/11.
The finals were scheduled to be completed last night.
