Canada win both men’s and women’s Sevens

—Guyana beat T/dad 27-0 in Plate final

Canada yesterday defeated the United States of America 26-19 in the final of the 2013 North America and the Caribbean Rugby Association World Cup Qualifiers at the Twin Elms Rugby Park, Ottawa, Canada.

Canada also won the women’s final defeating Trinidad and Tobago 46-0. Third place in the men’s competition went to Mexico which beat Jamaica 17-12 in their third and fourth place play-off. Mexico had earlier defeated Guyana 17-14 in their quarter-final match. The defeat eliminated the Guyanese who then participated in the Plate competition which they won by beating Trinidad and Tobago 27-0 in the Plate final.

In the other quarter-final results, the USA swamped The Bahamas 47-0, Canada beat Barbados 45-7 and Jamaica defeated Trinidad and Tobago 17-5. Guyana, the top seed in Group C had qualified for the quarter-finals by placing second in the group to Trinidad following their upset 12-19 defeat to Barbados.

That defeat forced them into a play-off with Mexico who placed second to Canada in Group `B’ rather than Jamaica which placed second to the USA in Group `A’.
The results mean that Canada and the USA have qualified for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens finals to be held in Russia.
