U-23 team’s participation for Brazil games doubtful

Up to pres time last night the Guyana under-23 athletics team’s participation at the 2012 Under-23 Championships in Brazil which was scheduled to commence yesterday was doubtful.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has selected a five member squad of 400 metres junior champion Stephan James, 100 metres junior champion Chavez Ageday, 1500 metres Carifta Games gold medalist Jevina Straker, long jumper Cindy Fraser and triple jumper Natreena Hooper, accompanied by co-coach of the Running Brave Athletics Club Sham Johnny to attend the games which is scheduled to end on Sunday.

The team, which is expected to depart for Brazil this morning, was last evening still unsure of its status.
Lack of funding that might either cause the team not to go or some of the members to be on the flight to Brazil today was according to the source the main reason for the uncertainty of the team.

Up to press time last evening it was understood that AAG executives were in a meeting concerning the status of the team.
Multiple efforts by Stabroek Sport to contact AAG president Colin Boyce for an official comment on the team’s status proved futile.
