Barrington century highlights GDF-GYO Carib Beer Cup Match

A century from opening batsman Shemroy Barrington enabled the Guyana Defence Force to reach 285 all out on the first day of their Carib Beer Heroes Cup match against the Gandhi Youth Organization yesterday.

Playing at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground in a game that started over an hour late GDF won the toss and batted.  Barrington, playing at his former home ground has been in decent form throughout the ‘Heroes Cup’.  Coming in to the match after failing to build on consecutive half centuries last weekend, Barrington struck 105 with 16 fours and a six. His opening partner Isaiah Bijaddar was dismissed with score on 11, but GYO only snared their next wicket at 101 when Dillon Heyliger (22) was caught off the bowling of Pravindralall Persaud. Barrington and Marcus Watkins took the score to 150 before leg spinner Kamesh Yadram dismissed Watkins for 10. Terry Fraser helped himself to 63 with three sixes and an equal number of fours before he was dismissed lbw by Garfield DeRoach. Randy Lindore then made his way to 32 with three fours and Dennis Legay contributed 18 down the order. Garfield DeRoach finished with 3 for 44 from 9.4 overs while

Pravindralall Persaud took 2 for 49, but GYO’s stand out bowler was Kamesh Yadram who collected 4 for 62 from 18 overs.
GYO were off to a solid start, with the secure defense of Tagenarine Chanderpaul allowing him to progress to 29 while his opening partner, John Campayne was equally resolute and was not out with him on 26. The pair brought up the 50 partnership in 13 overs and safely negated 20 overs to place GYO on 63 without the loss at the close.

They begin this morning 222 runs adrift of GDF’s first inning’s score and will look to win first innings points to retain their fourth position in the tournament.
