Top clubs rewarded at GCA awards ceremony

By Neil Barry Jr.,

The top cricket clubs in Georgetown were last evening rewarded for winning competitions under the aegis of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) when that body held its awards ceremony at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands.

Among the clubs receiving awards were the host club itself which emerged winners of the Carib Beer and Friends of Cricket ‘Heroes Cup’ first division two-day competition.

The ceremony was attended by the winning team and special awardees as well as parents, representatives of the sponsors and coaches of the respective teams.

Also receiving an award was the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Under 13 team for winning the 2011 DeSinco Trading ‘Pee Wee’ League.

This presentation was originally set to take place at the launch of the 2012 edition of the tournament.
However, the inclement weather during the July-August period and the unfortunate accident of DeSinco’s Managing Director Frank DeAbreu resulted in the delay.

President of the GCA Roger Harper said last evening that he was grateful for the sponsorship and stressed the importance of it in the continuance and furtherance of the game. He thanked the sponsors DeSinco Trading and Carib Beer heartily and mentioned that Carib was seeking to sponsor a limited overs competition in the future.

Also receiving awards for their efforts in the Pee Wee league were Clevon McEwan, who copped the best batsman, best bowler and best all rounder prizes; Reaz Ali, who was rewarded for the best bowling performance, Timothy McAlmont, awarded for the best batting performance, Alex Rambarran for being the best fielder and the Gandhi Youth Organisation ‘B’ team, the tournament’s runners up. Malteenoes Sports Club carted off the top prize in the first division competition while DCC were rewarded for their second placed finish. The win was achieved despite the club’s ground only being in a state to host competitive cricket until the latter stages of the tournament.  Robin
