Scrabble players spelling charity

The Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) has organised the ‘Scrabblers Give Back Charity Open Tournament’ on Sunday at the Malteenoes Sports Club.

The tournament which will become an annual event will attract players such as National Champion Abigail McDonald, Runner-Up Leon Belony, former National Champion Fred Collins, James Krakowsky, Colin Chichester, Ewart Adams, Orlando Michael, Wakefield Skeet, Kampta Ramnarine, Devraj Deonarine and Grace Hercules among other others.  A release from Vice President Abigail McDonald said that the tournament will be an annual feature on the GASP calendar of events.

It also stated that the tournament is in its pilot stage and as it grows will attract more players.
In a previous interview with Stabroek Sport, McDonald said even though the GASP year does not start until January, they wanted to start it on a good footing. This is the first time that the association is hosting such a tournament.

Players will pay an entrance fee of $500 which will be matched by the association with the total amount being equally divided between two orphanages St. Ann’s and St John’s Bosco.  Players, according to the release, can also make donations in cash and kind which will be handed over to representatives of the orphanages.
