Former national goalkeeper and now coach of the Guyana Defence Force football team Denzil `Hunky Brains’ Thompson feels that proper preparation added to near perfect execution are the keys to success.

Thompson made the comments in a recent interview with Stabroek Sports at Base Camp Ayanganna Training Ground.

“Preparation has been going well with the emphasis on building for the future. My goal is to develop the team incrementally so that the overall level will improve gradually,” he stated.

“We have been preparing for a long time and currently winding down. Remedial training is currently being undertaken which serves to keep them focused and sharp while continuing the process of building chemistry and a strong team culture that will continue to provide us as well in the future.”

According to Thompson, the general consensus was that his charges are the favourites owing to their recent record of domination in three previous competitions which were the Namilco Tournament, the Banks Super 8 Cup and the Banks President’s Beer Super League.

“Realistically, the team that makes the least technical and tactical errors will be victorious. My team is young but eager to learn and that is clearly evident by our recent record. We have set goals which we have achieved and this tournament is no different. While we accept that we are the favourites, football is played on the field and from the quarter-finals it will become difficult. We will be taking it one game at a time while playing in units. It’s been a banner year and I trust to be in the final come January 1.

Thompson’s team opens their campaign against Black Pearl FC at 6pm this evening at the GCC ground, Bourda.
