Keep your Day Job!

Local punk rock band, Keep Your Day Job! (KYDJ) is fresh off its first tour in the Dutch South American nation. In a show titled ‘Unkies Rocked It in the Guyanas’ held in Paramaribo last Saturday featuring multiple rock bands, KYDJ! received very good reviews from an audience of 200+ .

The show’s success is no surprise, KYDJ! reportedly had another good crowd response from Upscale Restaurant a week before, the band released a few demos and the hit original song “Ocean Air” played on a Surinamese radio station.

Lead vocals and rhythm guitarist Gavin Mendonca told The Scene, “It was the most epic show ever! We rocked it; we really tore the place up!”

Lead guitarist Ryan Roberts said although they were pumped up and ready, he was a little worried because most of the bands before them were hard, metal rock and their band was punk rock. “By the time we started to play the first song I knew the entire night would’ve been awesome! The crowd started to go crazy, some people were running around in circles and a few others were climbing the stage and jumping off into the audience (crowd surfing) It was more than anything I ever expected.”

Nicholas Chung from another local band accompanied KYDJ! on the tour as a guest drummer.

The rock concert featured other rock bands from the region: Vseis! And Ae-ons from French Guiana, Tidal Wave and Arise to Fall from Suriname. The concert was held as a 4th anniversary celebration of Unker Bunker Terras – a rock bar in Suriname owned by regional rock oromoter Jerry Orie.

This was the very first time Guyana ever supported an event of this magnitude, and KYDJ! said it was a show like no other. “The best show yet, everything went smoothly and professionally, well organised.”

The band issued this statement on its Rock Promoter Page: “We’d like to thank everyone who was there and who supported us… this was definitely the most awesome show we’ve ever done!

“We are really look forward to rocking Unkies next year! ROCK ON!!”
