More Miami flights on the cards

Surinam Airways is moving to increase the number of its scheduled weekly flights between Georgetown and Miami in response to the high demand from its Guyanese passengers, the Airline’s Guyana Station Manager Rudi Westerborg said in an interview earlier this week.

Westerborg declined to provide details regarding when the additional flights would come into effect though it is expected that this could coincide with the airline’s acquisition of another 737 aircraft later this month.

April 3 will mark the first anniversary of the commencement of the Surinam Airways service between Paramaribo and Miami via Georgetown and Westerborg told Stabroek Business that since then the airline had introduced lower fares on the Miami route. The current Georgetown-Miami-Georgetown service is non-stop and Westerborg said that the company’s assessment of the route had indicated that Guyanese travellers were “very satisfied” with the service. “During this past year of operations there was a steady growth in the number of passengers using our service…,” he said.

Meanwhile Westerborg has held out prospects of possible flights between Guyana and other destinations in the United States, though he declined either to name the likely new US destinations or to provide a time frame for their commencement.

Surinam Airways provides the only reliable air link between Georgetown and Brazil and according to Westerborg the Brazilian community here, which is mostly involved in mining is “quite happy” with the service since it allows them to fly home regularly.

Surinam Airways also provides an air link between Guyana and Europe and enables Guyanese to fly to Amsterdam and the Far East with relative ease.
