Spider lilies would make a good border

In the Garden

Hymenocallis littoralis commonly called Beach Spider Lilies are popular decorative plants with long curved leaves and spider-like lilies which are very fragrant.

They do best in sunny conditions and can be grown as potted plants or as borders.

Spider Lilies grow in tropical and subtropical Central and South America.

20130407peggyPlant Spider Lily bulbs in a sand mixed soil—one part potting soil to one part sand would be the best mixture—this helps to drain the water quickly.

20130407lilliesYou can also plant a bed or fill up an empty space with these lilies. Plant them approximately 6 – 12 inches apart. Water plants once per day so that they do not dry out, as they like a little moisture. Fertilise with Miracle Gro All Purpose once every two weeks. Remember to cut off old stalks with dried out flowers so that the plants can bloom again.

Until next week, happy gardening.
