Dendrobium orchids originate from South-east Asia and the South Pacific including India, Australia and Fiji. Dendrobium means ‘tree dweller’ and this tells you that these orchids grow on trees in the wild. There are approximately 12,000 species in this genus.
Dendrobium orchids are garden treasures and are always popular. This species has pseudobulbs which produce roots and have cane-like stems with leaves. They produce long spikes of flowers, sometimes as many as 20-24 flowers on a spray.
Dendrobium can be grown under 50% shade, on a tree, in a hanging basket or in pots with a medium of small stones, charcoal, tree bark or perlite.
During the dry season water it every day, preferably in the mornings. Be careful not to over water the plants, and mist plants if it is too humid. Fertilize with Miracle Gro Bloom Booster or Orchid food as per manufacturer’s recommendation, and during the rest period with Miracle Gro All Purpose.
There are many man-made hybrids on the market. One popular hybrid is Den phalaenopsis, mostly done in Singapore and Thailand, and which has a dazzling display of blooms and colour. These blooms are exported all over the world as cut flowers and are florists’ favourites because of their long-lasting beauty.
