Bird’s nest fern

20130922peggyFerns makes excellent houseplants. They are a decorative focal point of a room.  There are several varieties of fern to choose from, but most ferns grow under shade or filtred sunlight.

Bird’s nest fern

Asplenium nidus commonly called Bird’s nest fern originates from tropical Asia and Australia where it grows naturally in the wild.  Prized for its fresh green glossy leaves, the Bird’s Nest Fern is a handsome plant that will look good all year round.  So grow it on its own where it can be admired on a table facing a window.  Unlike most ferns, the glossy fronds arch away from a central rosette or funnel which resembles a nest.  Hence the name.

Bird’s nest fern likes to be moist, and grows well in a mixture of fibre dust, Pro Mix and Perlite.  Fertilize with Osmocote Slow Release Fertilizer once per month.

Until next week, happy gardening!
