The Boston fern

Nephrolepis exaltata bostoniensis commonly called Boston fern originated from the tropical and sub-tropical regions.  However, in 1894 it was found in Boston, hence the name. It is an old-time house plant which is popular on both sides of the Atlantic.  Here in Guyana it is known as the Hassarback fern, and grows quite well in filtred sunlight.  Its long green fronds standing gracefully in an urn pot are quite eye-catching at an entrance of any building.

in the gardenThe Boston fern is easy to grow as a pot plant and likes to be moist.  It also grows as a bedding plant. It does well in a mixture of potting soil, leaf mould and fibre dust.  Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food or Osmocote Slow Release Fertilizer once per month.

Until next week, Happy Gardening.
