Police efforts to battle crime and setting up a SWAT unit

Renrick Cheong, Mechanic – `As a former NYPD, I think they need to get professional people to be a part of the SWAT unit because the present police force has no courtesy and manners. They need to get serious. I hope they do the right thing. The government should sort out these people. Those who are not properly trained, they should take them out and send them back to school.’

Ramesh Kishun, Mechanic and farmer – `I think the SWAT team will bring some sort of justice. Especially since the Christmas season is approaching and crime usually increases around that time. But they must do their jobs properly. If done right, justice should be served.’

Omesh Singh, Mechanic – `It is very promising. We just have to wait and see what the outcome will be. For now, I think it is a very good idea, I just hope it works out.’

Michael Marks, Landscaper – `People have to fight crime and cooperate with the police. I will wait and see what will happen because a lot of time they say, this will have (impact) and nothing happens. These young police officers join the force to get money…’

Indra Ragabir, Housewife – `I will be very glad for crime to stop. I want this country to develop more. Right now I think the bandits more plenty than the police. I am excited about the SWAT unit.’

Margaret Jacobs, Housewife – `The SWAT unit is a good idea to help us. I am excited about this new venture by the police force. The SWAT team promises a brighter future for the youths and more protection is expected.’

Paul Lucas – `It’s very good if it is being implemented by the overseas government but if it is the Guyana government doing it, then it is not a good idea. I don’t want a replay of the black clothes police. It has to be well supervised and organized. If it all that then I am all for it. If it eases the crime when they start with the SWAT then I will be all for it. I am going to wait and see what happens.’

Allison Letlow, Vendor – ‘I don’t think it will make a difference. If they can’t do anything about the crime now, then I doubt a SWAT team will be able to do anything, the bandits have bigger guns and more sense than the police.’

Patrick Peters, Miner – `They already have the black clothes police killing people. Now with this SWAT, there will be more killing. I don’t think they need a SWAT unit. Our crimes here don’t involve big time bank holding up. The police is just fine, they just need to train them better.’

Sonia Deonarine, Vendor – `I think it is good. There will be more police to protect people. Especially since the Christmas season is approaching, we normally need more protection around then. Plenty thieving happens around Christmas time. I am very excited if there is going to be peace. It is a good idea.’
