Padma Bhushan for Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore

Six months after the death of ‘India’s first superstar’, the central government honoured Rajesh Khanna with one of India’s highest civilian awards on the eve of the country’s 64th Republic Day, according to Reuters. Reports last month said the famed Bollywood actor might have been up for the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, but “Kaka” as he was affectionately known to the legions of his fans will get a Padma Bhushan, the third highest.

Also receiving a Padma Bhushan was Sharmila Tagore who starred in several famous movies with Khanna such as Aradhana and Safar. Photo shows Sharmila and Rajesh in a scene from Aradhana.
