Bouterse: Educational system must turn Suriname into best in region

(de Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – Suriname’s educational system must see to it that the country becomes the best in the region both qualitatively and technically. This system must be based on true love of the country and focus on the free development of Suriname’s culture. It must also produce well-educated and well-trained citizens who can take advantage of the available technical opportunities.

President Desi Bouterse described his long-term vision on education with these words when he opened the conference of the political party VHP in the KKF building on Saturday. The VHP organized the conference as part of the celebration of its 64th anniversary, and it was intended to start a debate on a long-term vision for Suriname’s development. The President mentioned four other aspects as well. Bouterse wants to create a sustainable society “in which government and citizens are aware of their responsibility for the environment.” He would like to see the country prepare for possible climate change and less favourable economic conditions. Suriname’s people must also have real influence on political decision-making and control over political actions “at all levels.”

The President wants to move towards a social-economic system that is controlled by society and primarily focuses on the needs of Suriname’s people. The head-of-state also wants to create a “social order that is based on strong mutual solidarity, tolerance and mutual respect. This order will focus on the social independence of our people.” The day’s discussion chair Urmila Joella called Bouterse’s speech ‘inspiring’ and asked for a standing ovation afterwards. Santokhi called the President’s insights ‘progressive,’ agreeing with him that a consensus must be reached about the direction the country’s development should take in spite of the different views of different groups in society. Besides that, the two politicians also share the view that there is no fixed and foul-proof method to achieve goals for the future.
