Acting T&T CoP probing infamous ‘Flying Squad’ claims

(Trinidad Express) Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams has launched an investigation into claims that a revamped “Flying Squad” is currently operating.

Williams made the statement yesterday during a post-Carnival press conference at the National Security Ministry’s headquarters, Temple Court, Abercromby Street in Port of Spain.

Former Flying Squad member, retired police inspector Mervyn Cordner, said last week the infamous police squad was revamped and being led by him.

Williams said this claim is being investigated.

“That matter is being investigated and it is not being investigated in the way that you have a crime committed and you investigate a crime…it is information coming to hand and you want to make some clear determinations.

“Is there something which is criminally involved in this or is there something illegal? Is this something which must be effectively addressed, so that matter is being investigated to collate the type of information,” Williams said.

Cordner claimed he was approached by National Security Minister Jack Warner to lead the unit. But Warner distanced himself from Cordner’s claims.

Last year, Warner spoke of the possibility of a “sanitised version” of the Flying Squad being reinstituted.

“I had a brief discussion about this idea with the Commissioner of Police and he disabused me of that suggestion and that was the end of the matter for me and no one can say I authorised, met, approved, conferred with any such organisation as a consequence,” Warner said.
