Cocaine valued at US$4.7m seized at Jamaican port

(Jamaica Gleaner) The Jamaica Customs Agency and the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division of the police force yesterday seized cocaine valued at US$4.7 million (J$478m) at the port.

In confirming the find, Commissioner of Customs Major Richard Reese told The Sunday Gleaner that the cocaine, 361 kilos, was in a container which originated in Venezuela and was destined for The Netherlands.

“This is the third significant cocaine seizure by Jamaica Customs and the police in recent time, and the largest for the year,” said Reese.

“It shows that Jamaica Customs is making significant strides,” added Reese, as he pointed to recent training for local customs officials from French Customs, with other training programmes scheduled to take place shortly.
