Man denies assault on woman

-released on self-bail with peace bond

A man was on Monday placed on self-bail and bonded to keep the peace after he denied an unlawful assault charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that on December 31, 2012 at Regent Street, Georgetown, Milton Branford unlawfully assaulted Nicole Softleigh.

Branford, 56, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
The prosecution reported that the facts were as charged and no further details of what transpired on the day in question were given to the court.

Attorney Mark Waldron, who represented Branford, asked that bail be set at a reasonable sum on the grounds that his client posed no risk of flight, since he has a permanent address at 8 Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara. He also told the court that his client has no pending or previous matters in court and that he has been cooperating with police investigators.

The lawyer further added that his client had been reporting to the police station whenever told to do so, prior to being arraigned.

The prosecution had no objections to counsel’s bail application and the defendant was informed that he would be sent on his on recognisance. The matter was transferred to Court 10 for February 18, for reports and fixtures.
